Mythological Heroes 1 Myths are traditional stories that have been passed down from generation to generation and often involve gods or heroes . Their original purpose was to explain natural events and human behavior in a way that ordinary people could understand . In Greek mythology , the gods were similar to humans . They looked the same , and had similar problems and feelings . However , unlike humans , the gods did not die . There are many Greek myths about heroes who often went on long journeys and had difficult tasks to carry out . For example , Theseus was the king of Athens who killed the Minotaur , a monster that was half man and half bull . Jason went on a quest to find the Golden Fleece * and killed the dragon that guarded it . Agamemnon took an army to Troy to rescue Helen , a beautiful Greek woman who had been captured by the son ofthe King ofTroy . These , and other mythical heroes , had superhuman strengths but also weaknesses , just like humans . In mythology , a weakness is called the tragic or fatal flaw * .
