Venice Example : Excerpt 1— Relax in a Fane caf e and watch the p eople 00 by . 1 Everything in this city , from the fashionable shops to the colorful paintings on the sidewalk and the ornate architecture of the museums and art galleries , whispers : "Look at how beautiful I am ! " The broad , tree- lined avenues extend as far as the eye can see . Even on a cloudy day , the sky seems bright and the cool air sprinkles you with moisture from the fountains . In the early morning , you will smell freshly baked croissants . Later on , the air resounds with music and happy laughter . You can spend the afternoon at a cafe , sipping hot chocolate or creamy cafe au lait while you watch the people going by . 2 This huge city is always a hive of activity , with men repairing the roads and yellow taxis honking their horns . Everyone seems to be in a hurry , either rushing along the busy sidewalks or impatiently waiting for the congested traffic to move on . Those standing still have stopped to buy a hot dog or pretzel from a street vendor . Skyscrapers tower over you and even the hot air rising from the subway is part of the scene in this commercial capital of the world . The city offers great theater , miles of department stores and an enormous park where you can get away from it all . 3 Feel like you are floating in this city built on the water , where canals often take the place of streets . You can sit back lazily in a gondola and let the world drift by to the gentle music of a mandolin . Or , if you prefer , you can take a leisurely stroll through winding alleyways and over little bridges , looking for lessons in history . The city will charm you with its friendly and romantic atmosphere . As the sun warms you , chill out with ices that melt in your mouth or sit in a shady spot in the city's famous square and feed the pigeons . Relax in a Paris cafe and watch the people go by . Admire the impressive buildings in St . Petersburg . Take a romantic trip in a gondola in Venice .
