None of his movies is quite like another since this master director took a different approach to each film he made . In fact , he was constantly inventing new ways to shock and thrill his audiences . As Hitchcock himself once said , his mission in life as a director was to simply scare people . 2 Hitchcock was born in London on August 1 3 , 1899 , and his career in silent films began in 1919 . After learning scripting , editing and art direction , he made his way up in the movie business , becoming a director in 1925 . In 1926 , he became known for his direction of the film The Lodger . In this film , Hitchcock developed his trademark suspense plot : an innocent hero is accused of a crime that he did not commit . Then he or she becomes involved in a web of lies and tricks . In this successful film , Hitchcock also appeared in a very minor role —a trademark that characterizes every one of his films .
